FAQ: Will inquiries hurt the credit score?

An inquiry generally has very little impact on credit scores and any impact will not usually last for more than 3-6 months. However many different inquiries within a short period of time may be a sign of someone in crisis and in need of funds. This can have a more significant impact.  Fortunately, credit scoring models now take into account that individuals may shop around for the best rate and allow similar inquiries within a short period of time to be counted as once inquiry. For example, when shopping for a car or a mortgage, all credit checks for that product in a 14 or 30-day period will be counted as one inquiry.
