FAQ: Do businesses need consumer permission to see a credit report?
In most situations consumers permission is required for a business to pull a credit report. When individuals apply for credit or insurance, they are giving permission. In other cases, businesses need explicit written permission -- as with employers, landlords, utility companies, credit counselors, or car dealers for test drives. Often the permission is embedded in the fine print of the application. However, creditors and businesses can check your credit to make you product offers. These are considered "soft inquiries" and do not impact scores and are not shown to other creditors.
